The New Indoor Sun

The urban landscape makes it difficult for us humans to experience the bliss of natural sunlight at home, thanks to the towering high-rises. So how can we expect our houseplants to flourish or pamper them with the natural goodness of sun? Unless of course, we get sneaky and trap some solar power in the “Solight” and then hood it over the plant; trick it into thinking it’s getting some natural sunshine! Clever idea and no one will know how you manage to keep those plants happy…because you can stash the Solight away when not required!

Got A Chain Fetish?

Designer Cho Hyung Suk has an affinity for bicycle chains – for their utilitarian function and seemingly beauty. The B-Chain Lamp spins the bike chain into a new kind of object, one that is rigid enough to pose a light into various positions. There’s something oddly anthropomorphic about this design – maybe because it halfway reminds me of the Pixar Lamp. A Hanger, A Lamp, A Dryer

The way we Indians do it is we hang our towel out in the sun, every day, right after our bath. That’s the routine mom taught us when we were young, but the nextgen is too lazy to follow that. The laundry cycles is usually set for a weekly change in towels at most homes, so a system like the “Towel Hanger” suits the situation. It dries, deodorizes and sanitizes the towel, when you hang it on the rail. As an added attraction, ambient lights switch on, creating a sweet environment when indulging in an aroma therapy soak!

As good as a solution for any part of the world, so let’s keep the towels indoors!

Illuminating Cells

It doesn’t really take a lot to be creative in the way you illuminate your home space. From the outlandish Etirement lamp to the sophisticated elegance of the d°light Bubbles, all it takes is a little knack of picking out the best. The Cell Lamps here, easily fall into the “cute idea” category. Bunch-up a couple of them, just like the leaves of a tree, and see how awesome they look together. As a single piece, they give a healthy competition to the Soap Light.

Suction Pad LED Light

LED Light by Idea International is designed to be used when there needs to be just a little bit of lighting. The light sticks anywhere that requires light with the sucking disk, or with a pin through the hole on the disk for surfaces a sucking disk cannot attach to. The direction of light is flexible by the wire in its legs and you can also take off the light bulb apart from the legs and just roll it. Different color options are available, too.

tom dixon etch lamps

british designer tom dixon is exhibiting his 'etch lamps' at superstudio più,
during milan design week 2010. 

'etch' lamps employ an industrial process which is typically used in producing intricate electronic
products such as circuit boards, electrical components or medical equipment. the result is a structure
which exhibits detailed graphic filigree. the geometric construction of the light itself is not only decorative,
but also allows the extremely thin metal sheet in which it is made, to cross-brace itself into a structurally
sound manner, making a rigid exoskeleton.

the light effect is emitted from within the lamp, filtering through the thousands of tiny holes,
creating an atmospheric luminosity. like a molecule, each element of the lights, from the individual
'cells' to the whole form, is both infinite and modular.

'etch' lights are available in brass and stainless steel and come in four different versions:
a modular tea light holder (etch candle holder), flat-pack light shade (etch shade),
a range light (etch shade) and an edition (etch tower) which is reminiscent of a futuristic city skyline.

Diamond Ring~ Bigger the Better?

"Isn't this too big?"

IQ Light

IQ light^TM is a self assembly lighting system made up of interlocking quadrilaterals.
Lamps of various shapes and sizes can be constructed by linking together the identical elements.

The IQ light^TM system was designed in 1972 by Danish designer Holger Strøm, who was then working at the Kilkenny Design Workshops, Ireland.

He was originally asked to create a modular construction for a cylindrical and a spherical lamp, both to appear to be the same size, to be used in a Christmas display.

Designer Holger Strøm started taking an interest in the rhombic polyhedrons in the early 1970s while he was employed by the Kilkenny Design Workshops, Ireland. As a packaging designer he used cardboard and paper for his experiments in search of the polygon best suited as an element for building lampshades.

The rhombus was chosen as the basic element, and the rhombic triacontahedron as the geometric model for the construction.

Assembly needed to be as simple as possible, and after several experiments a hook was placed in each corner of the rhombus, the hooks being connected in pairs by a soft curve. Regardless of whether three, four, or five elements meet, the corners form decorative circles.

It was also desirable that the same element could cope with different degrees of contortion depending on the size and shape of the lamp. The material needed to be more pliable than cardboard and stronger than paper. The material was also required to admit most possible light while avoiding glare from the bulb.

Experiments with pliable sheet plastic allowed a new possibility: tension within the element. When a plane is curved in one direction, it becomes more rigid in the other direction.

The tension was created by lengthening two opposing sides, so they would curve out when hooked together and thereby give the two other sides the rigidity necessary for a 3-dimensional construction.

Because of the flexible elements, both flat and sharply curved surfaces can be formed. The openings ventilate the bulb and help diffuse the light without showing the bulb. The tension in the material allows the elements to grasp the flex so tightly that no other means of mounting is required.

The shape of the element gave an incredible degree of variation in form and size.

THE DESIGNER Since the late sixties, Holger Strøm has worked primarily in the field of corrugated card packaging design. As well as packaging, he has also designed exhibition systems, furniture and toys, all manufactured from corrugated card, and has worked on the development of parametric CAD systems for box design. He lives with his wife and daughter in Birkerød, Denmark, where he runs a packaging design studio.

The trade name IQ light^TM refers to the geometry: Interlocking Quadrilaterals, and not as you might think: Intelligence Quotient. Have fun!
