IQ Light

IQ light^TM is a self assembly lighting system made up of interlocking quadrilaterals.
Lamps of various shapes and sizes can be constructed by linking together the identical elements.

The IQ light^TM system was designed in 1972 by Danish designer Holger Strøm, who was then working at the Kilkenny Design Workshops, Ireland.

He was originally asked to create a modular construction for a cylindrical and a spherical lamp, both to appear to be the same size, to be used in a Christmas display.

Designer Holger Strøm started taking an interest in the rhombic polyhedrons in the early 1970s while he was employed by the Kilkenny Design Workshops, Ireland. As a packaging designer he used cardboard and paper for his experiments in search of the polygon best suited as an element for building lampshades.

The rhombus was chosen as the basic element, and the rhombic triacontahedron as the geometric model for the construction.

Assembly needed to be as simple as possible, and after several experiments a hook was placed in each corner of the rhombus, the hooks being connected in pairs by a soft curve. Regardless of whether three, four, or five elements meet, the corners form decorative circles.

It was also desirable that the same element could cope with different degrees of contortion depending on the size and shape of the lamp. The material needed to be more pliable than cardboard and stronger than paper. The material was also required to admit most possible light while avoiding glare from the bulb.

Experiments with pliable sheet plastic allowed a new possibility: tension within the element. When a plane is curved in one direction, it becomes more rigid in the other direction.

The tension was created by lengthening two opposing sides, so they would curve out when hooked together and thereby give the two other sides the rigidity necessary for a 3-dimensional construction.

Because of the flexible elements, both flat and sharply curved surfaces can be formed. The openings ventilate the bulb and help diffuse the light without showing the bulb. The tension in the material allows the elements to grasp the flex so tightly that no other means of mounting is required.

The shape of the element gave an incredible degree of variation in form and size.

THE DESIGNER Since the late sixties, Holger Strøm has worked primarily in the field of corrugated card packaging design. As well as packaging, he has also designed exhibition systems, furniture and toys, all manufactured from corrugated card, and has worked on the development of parametric CAD systems for box design. He lives with his wife and daughter in Birkerød, Denmark, where he runs a packaging design studio.

The trade name IQ light^TM refers to the geometry: Interlocking Quadrilaterals, and not as you might think: Intelligence Quotient. Have fun!

After two year @ NUS The Deck, Arts Canteen

The Deck, the Arts canteen at NUS was the first decoration project for Decor La Vie. Check out when it was first installed. I happened to drop by NUS one day and found that the Lucky Stars are still shining bright and hanging high.
In these two year, we at Decor La Vie has done numerous decoration projects big and small. Each of the projects tells a story and it will become part of the memories for all of us at Decor La Vie. Thank you for everyone's support.

Decor La Vie @ Gobal Sounds Cafe, Smith Street

Global Sound Cafe is located at Smith Street, it is along Eu Tong Sen Street, next to the Fo Ya Shi temple of China Town. At night Smith Street is blocked off from cars as it transforms into an eatery street with stores serving local delicacies.

Global Sounds Cafe consist of the first floor, the second floor and third floor. The first floor serves as a retail space for creative, decorative gadgets and gifts while second and third floor serves as a cafe.

Decor La Vie has provided Global Sounds Cafe with our signature Lucky Star Lanterns to give it a cozy ambiance that goes inline with their "feel at home" theme.

A live band occasionally performs at Global Sounds Cafe. You can also hold private events and parties there.

21st Birthday Party

For Decor La Vie, the year 2009 began with a new decoration project at one of the terrace houses at Kambangan. The house was decorated for a 21st birthday party.

The theme for the party was royalty, hence we had decided to have gold, silver, white and purple as the colour theme.

Lucky Stars deployed: Glizzy Gold, Glizzy Silver, Butterfly Effect, Happy Confetti.

A White Magical Night was used to decorate the middle of the dance floor, it stood out prominently with its unique shape and golden coating.

Gold and Purple streamers were arranged in a form that they radiates out from the centre of the dance floor to 5 corners of the hall, along with strings of Lucky Stars hanging below.
